The challenge
The source material was a fifteen-part training textbook for a line of water filtration equipment. The information was there, but it read like an owner’s manual. A technician standing in front of a system with a problem needs something different. They need the right procedure, in order, with the right picture beside it.
The approach
The model I chose was the classic shop manual, the kind mechanics have used for decades. Procedures are numbered and complete. Illustrations sit next to the step they explain. Warnings appear before the step, where they can prevent a mistake.
AI helped organize the material, restructure chapters around tasks instead of topics, draft procedures from the source text, and produce supporting diagrams. It did not decide what was technically correct. Every procedure has to be checked against reliable source information by someone qualified to sign off on it, and that’s especially true when the work involves electrical, plumbing, or chemical systems.
The development
The deliverables
- A restructured manual outline organized around service tasks
- Procedure drafts and supporting technical illustrations
- Training presentation material and competency checks
